who are we and what we do

Empowering Urban Farmers with Flexible Learning, Ongoing Support, and Regenerative Farming Practices
The MFK Gardens The Urban Farmer Learning Centre a dedicated arm of the MFK-Gardens Centre, which also houses the Horticulture Seedlings Production Centre, is committed to helping urban farmers -- urban professionals and executives from corporate spaces — who generate capital during the week so as to invest in horticulture production.
We understand that you not only have the capacity, but more importantly, the inherent drive and willingness to farm with purpose.
We focus on those passionate about horticulture and agro-processing, even without formal training.
Our Learning Centre offers high-quality theoretical and hands-on training designed to build competence and confidence in farming practices.  But what makes us different?  Regenerative agriculture is not a side topic but form an integral part of all our programmes.  Our programs empower farmers with the knowledge to regenerate soils and adopt sustainable practices.

Flexible Weekend Learning for Busy Professionals

At MFK-Gardens Farmers Learning Centre, we understand the time constraints faced by our core audience. That’s why our programmes are specifically structured around weekend classes, allowing busy professionals to acquire practical, intensive training without compromising their weekday commitments.  Our website also hosts a robust database of guides to ensure continuous learning and application of farming skills.

Ongoing Post-Workshop Support

We recognise that learning doesn't stop when the workshop ends. That’s why all our courses come with post-session support programmes to ensure you’re never alone in your learning journey. Participants receive access to field mentoring, seasonal guidance, and follow-up coaching designed to reinforce implementation and adapt practices to your specific farming context.

our faculty

The faculty at The Urban Farmer Learning Centre is a powerhouse of agricultural expertise, combining decades of hands-on experience with deep-rooted knowledge across diverse disciplines.

Led by accomplished professionals such as Mr. Bowefitswe Masilo, former Director of Agricultural Research in Botswana, and Mr. Tony Mokobi, renowned for his agribusiness training, the team brings unmatched depth in both scientific research and practical field applications. Their expertise spans regenerative agriculture, garlic and ginger-turmeric commercial production, mushroom cultivation, potato value chains, hatchery and incubation, soil science, and farm management.

With specialists like Mr. Peter Shame Ngorosha and international partners such as Mr. Hunter from Farmers Pride International, the Centre offers participants not only the technical know-how but also entrepreneurial guidance to scale their agricultural ventures. This diverse and seasoned team ensures that every workshop delivers robust, real-world insights tailored for the evolving needs of urban and peri-urban farmers in Botswana and the wider Southern African region.

Our Evolution and Programmes

The Centre launched its first offering on the topic Regenerative Agriculture (RA), attracting farmers eager to learn how we transformed our spaces into lush, green environments.  Since our inception in 2022, we have expanded steadily.

By 2024, we grew to include six expert trainers, each a leader in their respective field.  We now offer:
  • Short-term workshops
  • Refresher programmes
  • General interest and contract training programmes

Our courses are not school-based or academic; they are designed to:
  • Provide a solid foundation with immediate, actionable field practices
  • Serve as a springboard to longer-duration academic programmes at institutions like BUAN

We also provide a supportive space for urban commercial farmers to build networks, share knowledge, explore contemporary challenges, and develop innovative, regenerative practices.

Why We Do This

Our mission is to embed Regenerative Agriculture (RA) into everyday farming practices — practices that not only grow healthy produce but also regenerate soil fertility and reduce agriculture’s vulnerability to climate variability.

By offering a balance of theory and practical work, we help you grow in your personal competence, professional know-how, and confidence as a farmer.

Programme Highlights

Introduction to Agribusiness
A two-day weekend course designed to:
  • Introduce operational and leadership basics
  • Explore financial and marketing concepts
  • Align you with agricultural best practices
By the end, you’ll have the skills to lead a team (even your family), manage finances, and take the first steps to running a profitable agribusiness.
Introduction to Regenerative Agriculture (Regen)
Regen is reshaping farming as we know it. But adoption is hindered by lack of technical skills and risk-averse mindsets. This course introduces:
  • Zero-till drills
  • Ground cover techniques
  • Companion planting
  • Relay cropping
  • Organic fertilisers and green manure
We also explore water stewardship, crucial in a climate-stressed country like ours.

  • Soil science, ecology, and plant biology
  • Pest and microorganism management
  • Chemical-free crop production methods
By the end, you’ll be equipped with the skills to grow responsibly and regeneratively.

Who Should Attend?

Our programmes are designed for:
  • Commercial Farmers (self-funded)
  • Farm Managers
  • Home Gardeners
